Family Access is now available for grades K-12.

  • New Feature
  • Family Access now includes attendance information, messages and class assignments organized with a visually appealing calendar format.  This format is available for grades K-12 with K-5 tracking attendance and 6-12 tracking attendance plus messages, class assignments and grades.
  • Q ~ What is Family Access?
A ~ Family Access is a web based tool designed to enhance parent/guardian and school communication.  Your use of the Family Access website is voluntary.
  • Q ~ Does Family Access cost money or is there a fee that I have to pay?
A ~ Family Access is provided free as a service of the Orting School District.
  • Q ~ Can other people see my child's personal information on Family Access?
A ~ Family Access is password protected.  As long as you keep your password safe it is highly unlikely that anyone else will be able to access or view your child's personal information.  Some parents may feel the desire to share their password with their child in order to allow them to view missing work.  If you choose to do this, please stress the importance of keeping this password secret from friends.
  • Q ~ Does Family Access create a lot of extra work for school staff?
A ~ Family Access does create some extra work, but not as much as you might think.  In a nutshell, everything school staff does is now done in "real time". For example, in the case of attendance; we have always taken attendance, but now absences and tardiness show up on Family Access almost as soon as the data is input.  The same is true for secondary report cards, the data that was used before (and the same processes that were used before) will generate instant results.  In many ways, there is no "new" work, just "different" work.
  • New Q ~ Are all of Orting schools on Family Access?
A ~ Yes. We opened up Family Access for all 6th 12th grade families in October 2006.  The program was so successful that we were able to open it up for the entire student body grades K-12 in February 2007.
  • New Q~ I already have a Family Access account, do I need to fill another form out for my children in K-5?
A ~ No. Your younger children are automatically included in the account.
  • New Q ~ I filled out the consent form and listed all my children in the District; however I cant access information on some of them.
A ~ If this happens, contact your childs building secretary.  There may be a need to merge some records.
  •   Q ~ I have forgotten my user name and/or lost my password, what should I do?
A ~On the Family Access Logon Screen you will have the option to retrieve lost passwords via your email address that is on file with the District. Please make sure to update your email address through Family Access.
  • New Q ~ I tried to retrieve my password via email, but I do not receive it.
A ~ There could be several reasons for this to happen; We might not have your correct address in our system, call one of our secretaries to verify your information. Another scenario could be that when you updated your email address, you entered two addresses.  The system can only read ONE valid address.  If you have multiple addresses that you want us to know about, notify our secretaries and they can enter the second address in another location.
  • New Q ~ I entered my logon and password, but I just cant get into the system.
A ~ One scenario: The user logon name is made up of the first 5 letters of your last name, the first 3 letters of your first name and random 3 numbers IF your last name is not five characters long then you will need to enter spaces to make up the five characters. If you still cant get in, call our secretaries and they might be able to help you.
  • Q ~ I dont see yesterdays class assignments or grades?
A ~ Our teachers have five days to post grades and assignments.  There is also a teacher school email link so you can ask questions directly to your childs teacher if you have questions about grades and assignments.
  • Q ~ With all the talk about Internet safety and security, how do I know Family Access is safe?
A ~ Family Access uses Secured Socket Layer (SSL) encryption as the security layer for data presented on the Web.  This is the same encryption system used by sites that accept credit card numbers and other personal data that must be secure.  The District's Family Access Administrator is responsible for setting security and access to student records, as determined by District procedure.  Each individual, whether student, parent, or staff member, must be given a user name and password and be designated as a member of a household linked to a student in order to view Family Access information.
  • Q - When I log on to Family Access, I lose my connection after three to five minutes.  Why?
A - Family Access has a default security setting that will terminate your connection if your computer is idle for longer than three to five minutes.  This feature is designed to protect against unauthorized access and can not be changed.
  • Q ~ Why does it take so long for family access to load on the Internet browser?
A ~ Depends what modem you are using.  Basically there are three modems which are Dial-up, DSL, and Cable.  Dial-up is very slow, DSL is quicker than Dial-up, and the fastest is DSL.
  • Q ~ I can't get Family Access to work on my computer; what should I do?
A ~ Family Access is a web based product, so it should work on your computer like any other web based application.  One thing you can check is to make sure you have the right Family Access web site address, or URL; http://family.orting.wa-k12.net .  You can also access the Family Access web portal from the Orting School District home page at: .  Something else to check is to see if your browser is compatible with the Family Access program by clicking the link on the opening logon screen; Web Browsers that work with this product.
  • Q ~ What if I forget or lose my password to Family Access?
A ~ See the attachment above for retrieving passwords.
